Patricia Willocq, Belgien

Auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent haben Menschen Hautfarben in allen nur vorstellbaren Schattierungen. Farbabstufungen, die ein Leben einfacher oder schwerer machen können. Eine Ausprägung ist besonders auffällig: die sehr weiße Haut, wenn sie zusammenkommt mit einer ungewöhnlichen hellen Haarfarbe und blauen oder grünen Augen. Je nach Einfallswinkel des Lichts können sie rot erscheinen. Diese Menschen werden angestarrt, ausgelacht, ausgegrenzt und verfolgt.

Albinismus ist die Bezeichnung für eine angeborene Stoffwechselerkrankung, die zu einer Störung der Melaninbildung führt. Hierdurch fehlen die dunklen Pigmente in Haut, Haaren und in der Iris der Augen.

Die Betroffenen sind häufig sehbehindert und brauchen besonderen Schutz vor der Sonne. Oft bekommen sie Hautkrebs. Und sie leiden unter gesellschaftlicher Stigmatisierung.

Da grenzt es fast an ein Wunder, mit welchem Mut, Selbstbewusstsein und Erfolg die Albinos in Kinshasa, der Hauptstadt der Demokratischen Republik Kongo, an der Überwindung ihre Außenseiterrolle arbeiten. Die Fotografin Patricia Willocq, die in Kinshasa geboren und aufgewachsen ist, konnte diese beispielhafte Entwicklung voller Bewunderung in den letzten Jahren festhalten.

Patricia Willocq was born and raised in Kinshasa (Congo DCR) in 1980. After completing her Master's degree in Translation she travelled the world and lived in many places (e.g. Belgium, Chile, Congo, Ireland, UAE, Tailand). Her interest in photography began to develop after having her photos published in the magazine Geografca (Chile) in 2005.

Since then she has developed her skills in stock photography. She was a Getty contributor for more than four years and she is part of Corbis Images agency since September 2013. Her photos have been published in magazines around the world. She published her first photo report about albinism in the Congo in September 2013 and won an Honourable Mention of Unicef Photo of the Year Award 2013.
